Pretty great.

Speaker C:

It's Anomaly Presents with your friends, the podcastronauts.

Speaker D:

Sounds like a lot of supernatural baloney to me.

Speaker D:

Supernatural, perhaps baloney, perhaps not.

Speaker C:

Hello and welcome to the Anomaly Presents podcast, The podcast about the genre movies that inspired a genre film festival.

Speaker C:

th,:

Speaker C:

Oh, boy, it's going to be great.

Speaker C:

Anomaly Film Fest dot com.

Speaker C:

Anomaly Film Fest on all your socials to catch up with all our.

Speaker C:

Our.

Speaker C:

Our filthy business.

Speaker D:

I'm trying to keep it clean over there.

Speaker D:

Okay, we have.

Speaker D:

Anders, are they.

Speaker D:

No, but they are standard.

Speaker C:

Standards are standards, and that's what we.

Speaker C:

We live by.

Speaker C:

So, yes, this is the Anomaly Presents podcast.

Speaker C:

We are talking about.

Speaker C:

The podcasts are talking about the podcast that inspired genre movies.

Speaker C:

No, it's the other way around, isn't it?

Speaker C:

It's the movies that inspired a genre podcast.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

We've been doing this for six years.

Speaker C:

I still can't get the fucking intro right.

Speaker C:

Anyway, tonight we are talking about jcvd, baby.

Speaker C:

We are doing our second Jean Claude Van Damme 3rd Jean Claude Van Damme movie, right?

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker C:

Because we've done Street Fighter, Target, Street Fighter, and.

Speaker C:

And now Bloodsport.

Speaker D:

So I forgot Hard Target because, like, I was like.

Speaker D:

No.

Speaker D:

One of my favorite.

Speaker D:

I'm ashamed.

Speaker C:

As an aside.

Speaker D:

Mullets.

Speaker B:

Roundhouse Kicks.

Speaker D:

Oh.

Speaker D:

So everybody watch it, then listen to our episode about Hard Target.

Speaker C:

Somewhere in the deep depths of the Internet, I found the work print for that movie.

Speaker C:

And I will be happy to share with anybody on this, the show.

Speaker C:

Currently, I think I'd get sued if it was anybody outside of this immediate circle but kp.

Speaker C:

Meg, if you ever want to see the work print for Hard Target, I allegedly have it on a hard drive somewhere.

Speaker D:

Just.

Speaker D:

Why am I not watching it right now?

Speaker D:

I feel like you failed me.

Speaker C:

Because we have to talk about Bloodsport.

Speaker C:

That's why.

Speaker D:

Oh, okay.

Speaker D:

Okay.

Speaker D:

That's.

Speaker D:

This is one of the few things.

Speaker D:

The few things, I'm like, all right.

Speaker C:

Number one, I enjoy carrot more than stick.

Speaker C:

So we're gonna do this, and then I will share that with you.

Speaker C:

If it was stick, it would be Time Cop.

Speaker C:

Anyway.

Speaker D:

Wow.

Speaker D:

But true.

Speaker C:

I mean.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Under.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Or would just go Seagal.

Speaker D:

Oh, that's a.

Speaker D:

You know what?

Speaker D:

I'm ready.

Speaker D:

It's different energy.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Like, very different energy.

Speaker C:

Do you know, Seagal, like, everything is blue screen now.

Speaker C:

Like, if he's driving, it's like a Seinfeld episode in a movie now.

Speaker C:

Because he doesn't.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Oh, it's real.

Speaker D:

Yeah, that just real bad dubbing.

Speaker D:

If they can cover his face in any way, all of a sudden he's 20 pounds thinner.

Speaker D:

And it's amazing because he can't kick.

Speaker C:

About knee height anymore.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Keeps on taking dubbing.

Speaker B:

What was happening with some of the dubbing at the beginning of this movie?

Speaker D:

What are you gonna do.

Speaker B:

When the.

Speaker B:

I don't know, who, the colonel, the.

Speaker D:

Chief, whoever, the general that was wrong.

Speaker B:

When he dips, I'm like, what is happening?

Speaker D:

Because the movie knows.

Speaker D:

Like, you know what?

Speaker D:

It's fine.

Speaker D:

None of this matters.

Speaker D:

This doesn't matter.

Speaker D:

Don't worry about it.

Speaker D:

We're not.

Speaker D:

We're not going back to film that again.

Speaker D:

Come on.

Speaker D:

Kum.

Speaker D:

To film.

Speaker D:

Exactly.

Speaker C:

So, yeah, this is Bloodsport.

Speaker C:

It's:

Speaker C:

Shout out to our buddies over at Punches and Popcorn.

Speaker C:

Bolo Young, the patron saint of punches and popcorn.

Speaker C:

We love him here, too.

Speaker C:

Do you guys want to watch the trailer of this with me?

Speaker C:

Yeah, let's see if we can do it.

Speaker C:

We're going to try.

Speaker C:

I don't know if it'll work, but we're going to try.

Speaker D:

I believe in you.

Speaker C:

Thanks.

Speaker C:

I believe in me, too.

Speaker C:

And that's all that counts.

Speaker B:

Worst case, I'll just wash it in your glasses.

Speaker C:

There you go.

Speaker C:

This is the thing.

Speaker C:

Complete aside.

Speaker C:

Next time I get glasses, I have to get the AR reflective.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Because this time I was like, I don't need that.

Speaker C:

And then I realized I spend a couple hours on video every week, and I'm like, oh, shit, this is terrible looking.

Speaker C:

I cheaped out.

Speaker C:

And I'm very sorry that you get to see whatever's in my frames if you're watching on video.

Speaker D:

If you're not, you're missing out.

Speaker D:

Yo.

Speaker D:

Anomaly Film Fest on Twitch.

Speaker D:

Sometimes we'll pop up and we're live recording.

Speaker D:

And then you won't hear this again.

Speaker D:

This will not be released at the podcast for at least a month.

Speaker C:

That's right.

Speaker D:

How could you wait?

Speaker D:

How could you wait?

Speaker C:

Also, our faces are delightful faces.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Which.

Speaker C:

All right, I'm gonna pretend I'm at work.

Speaker C:

Can everybody see my screen?

Speaker D:

Yes.

Speaker D:

You're muted.

Speaker D:

You're muted.

Speaker D:

Okay.

Speaker C:

Can everybody hear me?

Speaker C:

Okay.

Speaker C:

Okay.

Speaker C:

So here we go.

Speaker A:

For centuries, the Society of the Black Dragon has sanctioned an ancient right of combat known as the Kumite Open Only to the world's most lethal warriors.

Speaker A:

It has never been won by a Westerner.

Speaker A:

You are not Stepp.

Speaker D:

I can do it.

Speaker A:

Now, for the first time, the true story of America's super agent Frank Dinks can be revealed.

Speaker A:

Uncle Sam can't afford to let you get hurt.

Speaker D:

I'm going to.

Speaker D:

Uncle Frank is going to fight in the kumite and we're here to stop him.

Speaker A:

An awesome human weapon.

Speaker C:

There.

Speaker C:

It's me, just looking at it.

Speaker A:

Who infiltrates the Chinese underworld.

Speaker D:

I did not come this far to stop now.

Speaker A:

Take him to enter a forbidden competition.

Speaker B:

Couldn't you just get me in straight.

Speaker D:

Strict rules, no press.

Speaker D:

You telling me you never break rules?

Speaker A:

Wear every fighting style, every worthy opponent, every deadly technique.

Speaker A:

Clash in savage combat.

Speaker A:

Time to separate the men from the boys.

Speaker A:

And only one will triumph.

Speaker A:

Now I break you.

Speaker A:

International martial arts sensation Jean Claude Van Damme.

Speaker D:

End.

Speaker C:

Blood.

Speaker A:

Blood sport.

Speaker A:

The true story of the ultimate champion.

Speaker B:

The way I have been just chanting.

Speaker D:

Go, right, I feel like really, any situation can be made better by just a.

Speaker B:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker D:

You want to go out to eat test today?

Speaker D:

What's the worst of all the lies of that trailer?

Speaker D:

No, Dukes is Canadian.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Canadian American.

Speaker D:

I thought.

Speaker B:

Yeah, Canadian American.

Speaker C:

I feel like, as Rochesterians, aren't we all Canadian American at a certain point?

Speaker D:

Well, I mean.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah, exactly.

Speaker D:

Salute to our.

Speaker D:

Our proud friends across the great lake.

Speaker C:

We love you, we love your guests.

Speaker B:

And Tim Hortons and hockey.

Speaker B:

Thank you so much.

Speaker C:

Great.

Speaker D:

I won't get into it now, but I'm like, oh, God.

Speaker D:

They repeated it twice.

Speaker D:

The true story.

Speaker D:

Yes.

Speaker C:

Based on true story.

Speaker C:

As much as anything Frank Dukes ever said.

Speaker D:

Oh, my God.

Speaker B:

I rewatched this on Sunday and I remembered a lot of it.

Speaker B:

I think some.

Speaker B:

I did get confused with kickboxer because it had been so long.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And I was waiting for the sexual assault.

Speaker B:

Then I was like, oh, thank God it's not this.

Speaker D:

This is what.

Speaker D:

One of the many reasons that I was like, I like bloodsport better.

Speaker D:

And it's because, hey, no sexual assault.

Speaker D:

Thanks.

Speaker D:

Movie.

Speaker D:

It wasn't needed.

Speaker D:

And you made like.

Speaker D:

No, there's no time.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

And stakes are already there.

Speaker B:

And when it got to the end, I was aghast.

Speaker D:

I.

Speaker B:

Because I.

Speaker B:

I said, there's no way this is real.

Speaker B:

And then immediately went to Wikipedia.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

This is one of those films and.

Speaker D:

And not in the Coen brothers sense where they say based on true stories.

Speaker D:

But, you know, they're just, like, doing, like, the, like.

Speaker D:

No, no, they're.

Speaker D:

They're Joking.

Speaker D:

And you know they're joking.

Speaker D:

This movie at that moment very much meant that this was based on true things that actually happened to martial arts hero, honorary ninja, CIA assassin, secret man, Frank Dukes.

Speaker C:

Yeah, Frank Dukes.

Speaker C:

Do you wanna.

Speaker C:

Do you want to take a couple minutes before we.

Speaker C:

We jump into the movie to talk about.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Our good friend Frank Dukes.

Speaker D:

I got so excited I dropped my pen.

Speaker D:

Okay.

Speaker D:

Yeah, let's do this.

Speaker D:

Because I love this.

Speaker D:

A lot of this information I'm going to highly recommend and I'll put a link in our.

Speaker D:

Our podcast episode page comes from the fantastic YouTube channel Napoleon Blown Apart.

Speaker D:

And he does a lot of like kind of like videos and documentaries about.

Speaker D:

Well, he does some MMA stuff, but very interested in what we would called martial arts fakes.

Speaker D:

Folks who have built careers on saying, like, I'm an amazing person.

Speaker D:

And to warm up to this, the Black Dragon Fighting Society and the Dim Mock were completely created by a.

Speaker D:

An insane man named Count Dante, who but also was an actual martial arts instructor.

Speaker D:

He did have a black belt, I'm gonna give him that.

Speaker D:

But he was also a little bit nuts.

Speaker D:

He tried to blow up a rival dojo at one point.

Speaker D:

He had been a hairdresser and I think a car salesman and then became a martial arts instructor.

Speaker D:

But this is the interesting.

Speaker D:

He also like knew how to make a book.

Speaker D:

Right.

Speaker D:

Like he was very good.

Speaker D:

And what he had found out is if you put an ad in the back of magazines.

Speaker D:

This is about:

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

What said.

Speaker D:

Do you want to know about the killing move that you can make with your hand for five?

Speaker C:

You know I do, yeah.

Speaker D:

This brochure will tell you about the Dim Mock, which is a killing technique only known by the Black Dragon Fighting Society.

Speaker D:

All absolute and all stuff that Frank Duke said.

Speaker D:

Oh yeah, I know what he's talking about because those.

Speaker D:

That's who runs the kumite.

Speaker D:

An actual factual thing that happens and not just built on.

Speaker D:

So anyway, we have someone account Dante who can actually fight.

Speaker D:

Just, you know, he's nuts.

Speaker D:

Right.

Speaker D:

There's a whole video on him too.

Speaker D:

Frank Dukes.

Speaker D:

Okay.

Speaker D:

Our.

Speaker D:

Our boy Frank Dukes.

Speaker D:

He says this is somewhat based.

Speaker D:

He says yes.

Speaker D:

When he was a young boy he caught the attention of Senzo Tanaka, a very real person who doesn't share.

Speaker D:

It's odd that he shares a name with a James Bond character.

Speaker D:

And Frank Dukes was a big fan of James Bond, though his argument later was oh no, no.

Speaker D:

He was just so amazing that people knew about him.

Speaker D:

So Ian Fleming just had heard the name about not.

Speaker D:

He really liked you only live twice.

Speaker D:

So already fantastic started.

Speaker D:

And he said, yes, he trained me.

Speaker D:

In fact, he trained me because he's part of an ancient ninja clan, that he trained me.

Speaker D:

And then he took me back to Japan to fight in the.

Speaker D:

In the city which is the home of the ninja.

Speaker D:

And I was accepted as part of their clan.

Speaker D:

This is the beginning.

Speaker D:

This is all like before he's 20, so he already has this.

Speaker D:

And because he was so good at this, and because Tanaka himself had fought in the kumite, he learned about a super.

Speaker D:

The super secret fighting tournament that also everybody knows about and happens all the time.

Speaker D:

But also it's super secret and no one's ever caught any footage of it.

Speaker D:

And it just happens that he's, like, undefeated every time.

Speaker D:

Was amazing.

Speaker D:

In fact, he got one of those swords.

Speaker D:

And later, the reason he doesn't have the sword anymore.

Speaker D:

Guys, guys.

Speaker D:

The reason that Frank Dukes doesn't have the kumite sword anymore is he traded it to Somali pirates for kidnapped kids years ago.

Speaker D:

Anyway, not to lose track of the very important story of Frank Dukes the kumite, he then later said that apparently he did serve with the Marine Corps briefly, though he makes it sound like he was in Vietnam when that timeline doesn't work.

Speaker D:

But this is the important thing.

Speaker D:

He didn't just lie about that.

Speaker D:

He lied about getting recruited by the CIA because he's such a good fighter that he taught them his own secret, like, martial arts moves.

Speaker D:

But also he was in disguise and, like, he just had all these things, but there's no records because they had to keep it secret.

Speaker D:

And in fact, it was so secret that he wrote an entire book called the Secret man.

Speaker D:

And he played she, published and then went on talk shows about how it was so secret that they couldn't give him all the words.

Speaker D:

They wanted to give him a Purple Heart.

Speaker D:

They can't.

Speaker D:

Even though that's not how commendations work, which they're supposed to be public, but they just couldn't.

Speaker D:

Not him.

Speaker D:

Now he'll tell you he's gonna get it.

Speaker D:

That's fine.

Speaker D:

No worries.

Speaker D:

Anyway, Frank Dukes, who held this, has, I think, has held this story that, like, oh, no, you can't find any records of anything I say that you can't find records of because it's top secret.

Speaker D:

Also, I'm James Bond, but I'm also a ninja.

Speaker D:

And also I'm so amazing.

Speaker D:

Look at this movie.

Speaker D:

Later, he sued John Claude Van Damme.

Speaker D:

So.

Speaker D:

And Sheldon Lettich, the screenwriter of Bloodsport, said, yeah, he told me a lot of tall Tales.

Speaker D:

But turns out it was all.

Speaker D:

So anyway, the hero, everybody, Frank Dukes.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker B:

That he was coached on what to say.

Speaker D:

Oh, he had a friend.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

Like.

Speaker D:

Like, yeah.

Speaker D:

Because Dukes brought a friend who said, oh, I witnessed all of this.

Speaker D:

Then later, they had a falling out.

Speaker D:

Weird.

Speaker D:

Why can't Frank hold any friend?

Speaker D:

Who knows?

Speaker D:

And he basically told, like, Sheldon, like.

Speaker D:

Oh, yeah, he just told me what to say.

Speaker D:

I didn't see any of that.

Speaker B:

There was always that kid growing up that would say, like, somebody famous is related to me, you know?

Speaker D:

Right.

Speaker B:

Or spinning tall tales.

Speaker B:

And then I don't know if they just never got the shamed enough to stop.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And then now how would you.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

Oh, it's just.

Speaker D:

It's amazing because it just kept going.

Speaker D:

Like, you think one of those.

Speaker D:

One of those things would be enough of a lie to build on?

Speaker D:

But no, no, he was like.

Speaker D:

And then.

Speaker D:

And then I fought Santa, and then all the gifts, I became Santa.

Speaker B:

I traveled back in time and.

Speaker D:

Exactly.

Speaker D:

Oh, so.

Speaker D:

But here's the thing.

Speaker D:

I can't be upset at Frank Dukes because we have Bloodsport, one of my favorite movies.

Speaker D:

So end of the story is, I guess you can get away with it.

Speaker D:

You can make it.

Speaker D:

You can inspire something interesting, and I didn't have to personally deal with you.

Speaker D:

Okay.

Speaker C:

Also, if we get mad at Frank Duke Dukes, his mom won't let us swim in the pool.

Speaker C:

So, like, yeah, we got friends with him because, yeah, it's getting to be summertime, and we need to be able to get in Frank Duke's mom's pool.

Speaker C:

So you can't really call him out on his lies.

Speaker B:

Yeah, this man looks wild.

Speaker B:

Just look at pictures of him.

Speaker B:

You can find.

Speaker B:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker B:

You can find via Wikipedia, like, the original article from a black belt magazine, which I remember as a kid.

Speaker D:

Oh, nice.

Speaker B:

Karate.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

I used to go and look through the black belt magazine while I was waiting for class.

Speaker D:

I love that.

Speaker C:

I love that you remember seeing Frank.

Speaker B:

There was a lot of mustachioed men.

Speaker B:

So I may not have realized that it was Frank Dukes, but, yeah, y' all.

Speaker D:

KP knows Dim mock.

Speaker D:

I don't want to blow up yourself.

Speaker D:

All I'm saying is, like, don't.

Speaker D:

Don't step to Kpop.

Speaker C:

Also, in a world of Frank Dukes, always be the Gene labelle.

Speaker C:

Always be Gene labelle.

Speaker D:

Take that, Steven Seagal.

Speaker D:

We'll go into that later.

Speaker D:

I love that story.

Speaker B:

Oh, my God.

Speaker D:

You can look it up now or we'll talk about it later, y' all.

Speaker C:

Google it.

Speaker D:

Great story.

Speaker D:

Look it up.

Speaker C:

Eventually, when we get to a Seagal movie, we'll talk about it.

Speaker C:

But you do judo.

Speaker C:

Gene LaBelle, name amongst names.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

So anyway, the movie which is supposed to be the life, the early life story of Frank Dukes, which starts with about a 20 minute mini movie.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Of a flashback before he opens the door.

Speaker D:

But you know what?

Speaker D:

I appreciate the movie's like, we got a lot to get into.

Speaker D:

Let's just.

Speaker D:

We'll just show you.

Speaker D:

Don't worry.

Speaker D:

We'll just show you.

Speaker C:

Yeah, it does.

Speaker C:

It does a great job of show.

Speaker C:

Don't.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

Yeah, I listen, the.

Speaker D:

The kid who's playing young Frank maybe can't convey the emotion, Any emotion he's supposed to.

Speaker B:

No.

Speaker D:

Because I don't think Frank's supposed to be just someone who just never reacts because it's.

Speaker D:

He and his friends are breaking in to Tanaka's house.

Speaker D:

Right?

Speaker D:

This is how they meet.

Speaker D:

And like, oh, they're gonna take the sword.

Speaker D:

But, oh, they hear a sound and they run and they're like, frank, run with us.

Speaker D:

And like, I don't know if it's supposed to be that he's not scared or what, but he just stands there as if our hero just doesn't know enough to leave when he's been caught breaking and entering.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

You know, like, he just stands there.

Speaker D:

He's like.

Speaker D:

And then, you know, like, so.

Speaker D:

And I guess that's how he becomes in this movie.

Speaker D:

He just stands there long enough that Tanaka's like, I guess I can train you too.

Speaker D:

Dumb kid who broke into my house and tried to steal my kumite sword.

Speaker D:

Because you can see by not being able to see what he would see in this blank board of a kid.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

So then he doesn't react.

Speaker D:

Anything.

Speaker B:

No reaction.

Speaker B:

But then he talks to the parents about martial science.

Speaker B:

And then dad's like.

Speaker B:

And he is martial science.

Speaker D:

He.

Speaker D:

He doesn't explain it, which I love.

Speaker D:

He goes into why, like, oh, well, you know, like a young man needs that.

Speaker D:

But he doesn't say what it is, which is like, just tell them it's martial arts.

Speaker D:

Tell them.

Speaker D:

Just tell them it's like physical activity.

Speaker D:

Please.

Speaker D:

The parents want some answers.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And then they just hand over their kid to be a punching bag.

Speaker C:

Yep.

Speaker D:

Yeah, there you go.

Speaker D:

We never see his parents again.

Speaker D:

They're alive.

Speaker D:

We just never see him.

Speaker D:

No.

Speaker D:

He has a new dad now.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

Senzo Tanaka.

Speaker B:

Yeah, but he has enough getting beaten up and not taught anything.

Speaker C:

It's.

Speaker C:

It's very parallel to Kung Pao.

Speaker D:

You.

Speaker C:

Know, we Trained him wrong.

Speaker D:

As a joke, though Frankie gets quite a break when Tanaka's son, Shingo, is killed, which really helps Frank, because then Frank is able to slip into that son thing again.

Speaker D:

He is a living father at this point, as far as we know.

Speaker D:

But no, no, no.

Speaker D:

He wants to be, you know, Tanaka's son and be trained.

Speaker D:

And then we get an awesome training montage.

Speaker D:

Oh, my God.

Speaker C:

One of the greatest training montages in history.

Speaker D:

Yes.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

Did you know, John, Claude Van Damme can do a split?

Speaker B:

They'll remind.

Speaker C:

Wait, what?

Speaker D:

Oh, yeah, don't worry about it.

Speaker B:

We got you covered so many times throughout the movie.

Speaker D:

I mean, I expect it.

Speaker D:

I'm not gonna complain.

Speaker D:

I'm like, listen, I guess if I could do that, I'd be doing it all the time, too.

Speaker D:

Oh, this went over here.

Speaker D:

Hold on.

Speaker B:

Let me just reach this down here.

Speaker D:

Pick it up.

Speaker D:

The mail.

Speaker D:

Full split, grab.

Speaker D:

Pick them up.

Speaker B:

Like the Barbie that you give the splits, like.

Speaker D:

And it's.

Speaker D:

It's one of my favorite kinds of, like, training montages.

Speaker D:

Especially, like, a martial arts one where at least half of it is, I'm gonna beat the out of you with, like, a stick or I'm gonna, like.

Speaker D:

And.

Speaker D:

And you just have to deal with it, which I love.

Speaker D:

I feel like maybe that's for a certain audience, and that's awesome.

Speaker D:

But also, I just love the idea that, like, I'm just gonna hit you.

Speaker D:

Take it.

Speaker D:

Take it.

Speaker D:

I'm just gonna string you up.

Speaker D:

But, you know, focus.

Speaker D:

I'm like, you sure he's not still messing with you?

Speaker D:

But I.

Speaker D:

I love it.

Speaker D:

It does set us up for the final fight, and it's one of my favorites where it's like, I'm gonna.

Speaker D:

I'm gonna mess with you for years, and that's training.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

But it sets.

Speaker D:

It.

Speaker D:

It sets up that he knows how to fight without seeing.

Speaker D:

It sets up that he can center himself when he is confused, is in pain.

Speaker D:

Like, the more it serves a purpose.

Speaker C:

It does.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

It is.

Speaker C:

It is.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Chekhov's training montage, where everything you set up in the first act comes through in the third.

Speaker C:

It's very, very good screenwriting.

Speaker C:

Shout out to our good friends Sheldon Lettich for coming through the movie.

Speaker D:

And it's telling us everything we need to know.

Speaker D:

Okay, don't worry.

Speaker D:

Here you go.

Speaker D:

This will come up again.

Speaker D:

Don't worry.

Speaker D:

We got you.

Speaker D:

And I was like, yeah.

Speaker D:

So it just sets up that entire relationship as he opens the door and, oh, no, Tanaka's dying.

Speaker B:

Oh, yes.

Speaker C:

Poor Tanaka.

Speaker D:

Oh, oh, we did skip a quick thing.

Speaker D:

I'm going to tell you why I skip it.

Speaker D:

Because I forget it every time.

Speaker D:

Yeah, I forgot.

Speaker D:

Yeah, he works for the US army and apparently super, super important.

Speaker D:

But I don't remember and I've seen this movie several times.

Speaker D:

If they ever verbalize exactly why he's so important that they need dudes to go get him from the kumite, they.

Speaker B:

Said that they put too much money into him.

Speaker B:

So the implication is probably that he's like an agent or important and like, he's Frank Dukes.

Speaker D:

You're right, Katie, what am I saying?

Speaker D:

Why are you asking questions?

Speaker B:

He's Frank Dukes.

Speaker D:

I love the movies.

Speaker D:

Like, yeah, like all you know is he's just super, super important to the army.

Speaker D:

So they're going to waste these two agents time because he's on furlough.

Speaker D:

Like he's on vacation.

Speaker D:

But they can't risk it.

Speaker B:

Wasn't he supposed to.

Speaker B:

I don't know if you're supposed to like actually check out when you go on leave.

Speaker B:

And then he just never did.

Speaker D:

So he technically.

Speaker D:

That guy.

Speaker B:

He technically went awol.

Speaker C:

That's awol?

Speaker B:

Yeah, because they weren't going to let him leave.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

Well, I mean, you got to catch him first.

Speaker B:

Yeah, he's quick, even in loafers.

Speaker C:

And let's take a moment to think about this here.

Speaker C:

He's going to put in his request for leave, and what is he going to say?

Speaker C:

I'm going to go join an illegal martial arts tournament in Hong Kong.

Speaker C:

I need the week off.

Speaker D:

Well, here's the thing.

Speaker D:

Of course he could.

Speaker D:

He's Frank Dukes.

Speaker D:

What are they going to do, stop him?

Speaker D:

He's the golden boy.

Speaker D:

The entire military is based on his training and his inspiration.

Speaker D:

Yes, salute.

Speaker D:

That's important because that sets up when he's there.

Speaker D:

So he's that.

Speaker D:

And then we learn that Tanaka is dying.

Speaker D:

So that's why he's come to say, basically he's like.

Speaker D:

He wants him to know that he won the kumite because Tanaka always wanted his son.

Speaker D:

Which is kind of a wild thought process to want your son to do that.

Speaker B:

But doesn't he explain it later kind of to the journalist?

Speaker C:

Kinda.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

Like I think it's about.

Speaker D:

But it's, it's.

Speaker D:

Yeah, it's.

Speaker D:

I mean, it's that whole.

Speaker D:

Her whole story about understanding what the.

Speaker D:

Which.

Speaker D:

I mean, it's dudes, you want to fight dudes.

Speaker D:

And it's okay, isn't it?

Speaker B:

Showing the setup of the kumite with him getting Ready?

Speaker B:

I'm trying to remember where it's interlaced.

Speaker D:

Oh, okay.

Speaker D:

So, well, actually the movie begins.

Speaker D:

Begins with a montage of different fighters training for the kumite.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

So we get a brief setup for like, okay, there's mixed martial arts.

Speaker D:

It's all these different styles.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Then we go to.

Speaker D:

The government doesn't want him to go.

Speaker D:

Then we get to him going to Tanaka and he's going to go to Hong Kong because that's where the kum is happening.

Speaker D:

So I think about that time we get a setup because that's when.

Speaker D:

About when so he meets his friend Ray.

Speaker D:

Not to skip ahead too much, I think when Lynn shows up, who's the guy who's like, hey, I'm here to take care of all the, like, the western fighters.

Speaker D:

And that's when he lays out like, no fighting outside.

Speaker D:

It's like a three day event.

Speaker D:

There's three ways to win.

Speaker B:

Like three days to win is when they're watching the first match.

Speaker C:

Right.

Speaker D:

It's like that's all part of that same thing where he's kind of guiding them through.

Speaker D:

And.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

And I think about that first day is where we get like the setup, like the basic rules.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Also Rey, you may recognize him if you are an 80s kid from revenge of the Nerds.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

I mean, I'll be honest.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

I was Ogre.

Speaker D:

I was like, oh, ogres in this film.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

I had cable.

Speaker D:

Too young, y' all.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Especially now I've been watching.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

If you are on the young side of our demographic and are curious about Revenge of the Nerds, don't watch it.

Speaker D:

You know what?

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

It makes you feel kind of ick.

Speaker D:

Yeah, it's an ick in there.

Speaker D:

Unfortunately, it's pretty yucky.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Pretty.

Speaker D:

Oh, watch Real Genius instead.

Speaker C:

Yes.

Speaker C:

Watch that twice.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

If you want an 80s college comedy that holds up, Real Genius is the one you want.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker C:

But he is a prolific television actor.

Speaker C:

You'll see him in a bunch of movie or TV shows from the 80s.

Speaker C:

He was an episode of Benson, an episode of the A Team, Night Rider.

Speaker B:

If they needed a big guy, he.

Speaker C:

Was your man hanging with Mr.

Speaker C:

Cooper.

Speaker D:

And he's very charming, which I think is needed for this film.

Speaker D:

I mean, listen, I love jcvd, but like, I.

Speaker D:

He's not like a quick wit.

Speaker D:

He doesn't.

Speaker D:

He's not warm.

Speaker D:

Right.

Speaker D:

He's not.

Speaker D:

Doesn't have the warmth that like Ray has in this, which is like, oh, this big O of a guy.

Speaker D:

But I like him like.

Speaker D:

Like, you Instantly kind of like him.

Speaker C:

Ray is fun as hell.

Speaker B:

All that blush on John Claude Van Damme doesn't make him warm.

Speaker D:

I love him.

Speaker D:

This is not a strength.

Speaker D:

And that's okay, that's.

Speaker D:

I think it was super smart to have the friend who is like, he's the.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Plus he also has some knowledge.

Speaker D:

More knowledge of the kumite.

Speaker D:

So he can kind of like they.

Speaker D:

As they talk, we get a little more.

Speaker D:

Plus they play a video game.

Speaker D:

That's how they bond.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Cute.

Speaker D:

Who am I?

Speaker D:

Yeah, he's just a.

Speaker D:

He's just a beer drinking big dude who can slam people.

Speaker D:

That's all he needs.

Speaker D:

What's his specialty?

Speaker D:

Big dude.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

They said we're not gonna even bother to give him anything.

Speaker B:

Just smash.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

If he does.

Speaker D:

Doesn't matter.

Speaker D:

They might have.

Speaker D:

It might be somewhere in the movie.

Speaker D:

But I'm like, big dude.

Speaker B:

No, they just had him punching a bag.

Speaker B:

I think America, they just said we need one guy who is American, can be charming, can kind of be fun.

Speaker B:

And then.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Everyone else just not say anything or barely talk.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

But he's also like, not a threat to jcvd.

Speaker D:

Like, you need someone who, like.

Speaker D:

But you know, here's the thing.

Speaker D:

You know, the good guy's gonna win.

Speaker D:

You need someone who can fight somewhat, but he won't make it to him.

Speaker D:

But that's okay.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

So, yeah, I thought that that would.

Speaker D:

That, that was fun.

Speaker D:

I love Lynn, their.

Speaker D:

Their connection guy with the sunglasses and the hustler energy.

Speaker D:

I love it.

Speaker D:

I love that.

Speaker D:

You know.

Speaker C:

Great.

Speaker D:

And then.

Speaker D:

Okay, so we have.

Speaker D:

That we have.

Speaker D:

We got for the first date, I think is that when we meet the.

Speaker B:

Reporter, she's at the bar.

Speaker D:

Oh, the bar first.

Speaker D:

Right.

Speaker D:

Because they, they protect her.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

So, yeah, because I don't think she.

Speaker D:

Shows up at the kumite yet because she's still trying to get in.

Speaker D:

That's why she.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah, right.

Speaker B:

You are correct.

Speaker D:

She was trying to talk to the one guy and you know, I got.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker B:

Did they go to the bar?

Speaker B:

Are they at the bar first and meet her before they go?

Speaker D:

Because then he's surprised on that when like.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

And then they meet and then they end up going on a day and.

Speaker B:

No, not even that.

Speaker B:

I mean, like, they go to the kumite and have to show their invitation.

Speaker D:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker D:

Well, this is important because this establishes the dim.

Speaker D:

I think.

Speaker B:

I think that's first.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker B:

They do that first because with them.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker B:

And so Frank has.

Speaker D:

They walk through the walled city.

Speaker D:

Yes, very cool.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

So I Like that they'd spend time in that, like in those alleys.

Speaker D:

It gives you this feeling of this is somewhere else, even though it's happening in Hong Kong.

Speaker D:

Like, this is.

Speaker D:

This is kind of like an unsanctioned little extra space where anything goes.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

And then, yeah, they show up because then they're like, hey, you have to show your invitation and they have to accept it to the very real black dragon fighting society.

Speaker D:

And why would you question me about it?

Speaker B:

And then they don't.

Speaker B:

They don't believe Dragon Van Damme because his shidoshi is Tanaka and he's like, this is a white man, basically.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

Who is this sort of Belgian American.

Speaker B:

Who'S this rosy cheeked white man?

Speaker D:

Get.

Speaker B:

Get out of here.

Speaker B:

So they hit.

Speaker B:

Make them do the.

Speaker B:

The very real death hit there.

Speaker D:

It's so fun because like, you know, it's like, okay, I'll.

Speaker D:

You choose which brick you'll break.

Speaker D:

And at first, like that, like the top one.

Speaker D:

And they're like, no, the bottom one.

Speaker D:

Just the bottom one.

Speaker D:

My God, that's impossible.

Speaker D:

No, not if, you know, if you know the dim mock.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

So that was.

Speaker D:

That's a nice thing because it's a nice setup because they're trying to set up like, yo, Frank is so amazing and unique and amazing.

Speaker B:

He's so talented.

Speaker C:

I don't know if you know.

Speaker D:

I'll tell you that.

Speaker D:

This is the first scene where I saw my new favorite character.

Speaker D:

Someone who flew under the radar the first couple times.

Speaker D:

The gambling guy.

Speaker D:

There's the gambling guy.

Speaker D:

He's right there taking notes.

Speaker D:

And then like, I saw him and all of a sudden I just started noticing him out through the movie.

Speaker D:

I'm like, he's my new favorite character.

Speaker B:

He's the bookie.

Speaker D:

He.

Speaker B:

I think he's like a bookie.

Speaker B:

I don't know.

Speaker B:

You know, he's great.

Speaker D:

He's.

Speaker D:

I loved him.

Speaker D:

I saw him and he's like, he's getting right in there with like, what's, what's going on?

Speaker D:

Can this guy break a break?

Speaker D:

Like, you think?

Speaker D:

I.

Speaker D:

I love it.

Speaker D:

I love it.

Speaker D:

It was great.

Speaker D:

But that's when we use him, right?

Speaker B:

Because they could have just had like random.

Speaker D:

Yeah, well, she's the reason.

Speaker D:

He's the reason the reporter shows up.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

Not the set, but like.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah, but this is, this is where Chong Lee, played by Bolo Young, gets like that first look at Frank's.

Speaker D:

At Frank and he's like, I see.

Speaker D:

You know, he's just like sizing up because he's the champion.

Speaker D:

He killed a guy last.

Speaker D:

The last time, as Lynn says.

Speaker D:

He has the.

Speaker D:

And the most important.

Speaker D:

He has the world record.

Speaker D:

He has the record for.

Speaker D:

I guess, world record.

Speaker D:

Even though this is secret.

Speaker D:

Doesn't matter.

Speaker D:

The record for knocking someone out the quickest.

Speaker D:

And he's killed a dude, so.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

But the record's the most important, especially to Chongley.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

And then now they.

Speaker B:

Oh, go ahead.

Speaker C:

No, go ahead.

Speaker C:

You're good.

Speaker B:

Oh, no, because then I was gonna say, then they go to the bar afterwards, so.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah, you're right.

Speaker D:

Yep.

Speaker B:

So then they go to the bar.

Speaker B:

That's where they meet Janice, who is a reporter who is trying to get the scoop on the kumite.

Speaker B:

And she is talking to.

Speaker B:

Was it Hassan?

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Something important to remember about this movie is the racism, is having a good time.

Speaker D:

Everyone's kind of where they're from.

Speaker D:

Yes.

Speaker D:

Their character is where they're from.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker C:

:

Speaker C:

Yes.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

You could be like, this is like the movie house where the girls don't have real names.

Speaker B:

Their name, you know, like, Syrian man.

Speaker B:

That is.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Basically.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

That's the world of the kumite.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

Where you're from and your fighting style.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

And he's not being very polite to Janice, who's trying to get that information.

Speaker B:

And so if we didn't think Frank was cool enough.

Speaker D:

Oh, right, right.

Speaker B:

He basically gambles, you know, because they can't fight or else they'll get thrown out.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker B:

So he tells Hassan, well, I'll give you this coin if I can take it from your hand faster than you can close it.

Speaker B:

She's mine.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And so he.

Speaker B:

He does it, and it's even a little bit more cheeky where he leaves a different coin.

Speaker B:

And of course, he winks at Janice.

Speaker D:

So, you know, and in case we didn't realize, this is from his training.

Speaker D:

They put a little flashback that we had just seen about 10 minutes ago about, like, him snatching the goldfish from the pod.

Speaker D:

I like the movie's like, you know what?

Speaker D:

Just in case you wander off for a second.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Don't worry.

Speaker B:

We've got.

Speaker D:

The movie's got you.

Speaker D:

It is holding your hand, like, don't worry, baby.

Speaker D:

There's an explanation for this.

Speaker D:

This very real thing that Frank Dukes did.

Speaker D:

No, but I like.

Speaker D:

It's all cute.

Speaker D:

I want to say cute character stuff.

Speaker D:

Not in a diminutive way, but in, like.

Speaker D:

It's all like, oh, that explains who he is.

Speaker D:

Plus, we're gonna see this dude later at the tournament and there'll be an extra reason to not like him.

Speaker C:

They do.

Speaker C:

This is going to be shocking because it.

Speaker C:

It's one of the things they do better than Enter the Dragon, which basically.

Speaker C:

This is just a cover of Enter the Dragon, if you really look at it.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

Yeah, 100%.

Speaker C:

But yeah, it's one of the things they do better is kind of develop the characters because you really only get the John Saxon, the Jim Kelly.

Speaker C:

Jim Kelly and Bruce Lee of it all.

Speaker C:

You really don't get any of the other guys.

Speaker C:

Right.

Speaker D:

This one kind of takes is 30% turtleneck.

Speaker C:

Yeah, that's true.

Speaker C:

That's true.

Speaker C:

USDA.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

I love him so much in that.

Speaker D:

But most of it's fashion.

Speaker C:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker C:

No, John.

Speaker C:

John Saxon.

Speaker C:

That's the only thing he's there for is just to look cool in a.

Speaker C:

Like a leisure suit.

Speaker C:

Somebody has to serve.

Speaker B:

Looks okay.

Speaker D:

All right.

Speaker D:

Nancy's dad started somewhere, then he became a police officer.

Speaker C:

That's right.

Speaker D:

And they saw a dream.

Speaker C:

All movies are connected as it always goes.

Speaker C:

You go from FBI agent, slash, you know, martial arts legend to local police officer.

Speaker D:

That'll happen.

Speaker D:

But, yeah, no, you're absolutely right.

Speaker D:

And I think that's part of.

Speaker D:

Probably one of the reasons I like this movie so much is I'm a sucker for a martial arts tournament.

Speaker B:

Yeah, great.

Speaker C:

It's great.

Speaker D:

I'm like, good.

Speaker D:

And the fights are good.

Speaker D:

They last just as long as they need to.

Speaker D:

You get just enough of like, oh, this guy's a high jumping guy.

Speaker D:

Oh, this guy's kind of a tumbler.

Speaker D:

Oh, this guy's a puncher.

Speaker D:

Like, I don't need to know the names of the different kinds.

Speaker D:

I'm sure.

Speaker D:

I'm sure they thought about it a bit.

Speaker D:

I don't need to know.

Speaker C:

Sure.

Speaker D:

I don't need to know.

Speaker D:

I just go, oh, is that capoeira?

Speaker D:

I don't know.

Speaker D:

He's jumping up high.

Speaker D:

Is that jiu jitsu, maybe?

Speaker D:

Who knows?

Speaker D:

I like it.

Speaker C:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker C:

It.

Speaker C:

It's flippy guy versus Big Hoss.

Speaker C:

It's the same reason I like watching wrestling.

Speaker C:

You know, it's that same.

Speaker D:

Exactly.

Speaker D:

And I think that first day is set up very nicely in that we get like, it's the lower stakes, but it's getting to feel like, okay, oh, you know, we.

Speaker D:

We see.

Speaker D:

We see our buddy Ray, his style.

Speaker D:

We see Chung Lee's and his likeness.

Speaker D:

Boom.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

New, new record.

Speaker D:

And then we set up why he really doesn't like Frank Because Frank goes in there, beats his record.

Speaker D:

Boom.

Speaker D:

And that's the thing that pisses him off.

Speaker D:

Not like, oh, he's a challenge, or he said something.

Speaker D:

No, no, he broke his record, and now he'll break him.

Speaker D:

Which.

Speaker D:

I kind of love the simplicity of that.

Speaker D:

I'm like, yes.

Speaker D:

And then peck.

Speaker D:

Twitch.

Speaker D:

Oh, that's the best way to punctuate a sentence.

Speaker C:

Bolo Young's twitch is world class.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

It belongs in a museum.

Speaker C:

It belongs in a museum.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

It's another part of how this movie is just, I think, set up really well.

Speaker D:

It's like, okay, we know how it works.

Speaker D:

We see how it works.

Speaker D:

Okay.

Speaker D:

We're gonna.

Speaker D:

Basically.

Speaker D:

Because now we can see when it gets wrong, when it goes serious.

Speaker D:

We see how it goes when, like, nobody's killed and all the people we, like, have made it through, you know?

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Y.

Speaker C:

Y.

Speaker D:

He was.

Speaker D:

Bolo's preferred martial arts is Tai Chi.

Speaker D:

Former Mr.

Speaker D:

Hong Kong Bodybuilding champion.

Speaker D:

That makes.

Speaker D:

Oh, he held it for 10 years.

Speaker D:

Yeah, that makes sense.

Speaker D:

That dude is, like, 50% chest.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Oh, I love it.

Speaker B:

From the jump, you can tell he's just having a good time, which makes us have a good time.

Speaker C:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

He's smiling like, I like a villain who likes being a villain, you know, like, oh, no, this is.

Speaker D:

This is me.

Speaker D:

Is it revenge?

Speaker D:

No.

Speaker D:

Like, do I have a dark past?

Speaker D:

Who knows?

Speaker D:

Who cares?

Speaker D:

He's just having a good time.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

He wants the tears of the crowd.

Speaker D:

He loves Chong Leaf.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

He will pause and not finish a match until he gets his cheers right.

Speaker D:

Love it.

Speaker C:

Again, perfect professional wrestler.

Speaker C:

He looks for.

Speaker C:

He gets his in, he looks for the pop, and then that's it.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Which wrestling would have been popping off at that time, right?

Speaker C:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker C:

This would have been.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

This late 80s.

Speaker C:

So this would be kind of just as it's cresting right before it gets into, like, that real weird thing where all the wrestlers just had jobs.

Speaker D:

Yes.

Speaker D:

Wait, they're not supernatural beings anymore?

Speaker D:

No.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

A little bit.

Speaker B:

It feels like that sometimes.

Speaker B:

Like you're watching a wrestling match.

Speaker D:

I was like, why would I watch wrestling?

Speaker D:

For it to be real.

Speaker D:

Not real, like Frank Dukes.

Speaker C:

But this is also the precursor.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Because I think UFC started maybe a couple years later.

Speaker D:

Yes.

Speaker D:

It's very interesting.

Speaker D:

Like, bloodsport is, like, before ufc, like, they had tried another Napoleon blown apart thing.

Speaker D:

He has a whole history video about the origins of, like, mixed martial arts fighting and some of the stuff that came before.

Speaker D:

Like, what we understand is UFC stuff now.

Speaker D:

And it's so interesting because, like, for kind of inspired some of that.

Speaker D:

There's stuff that existed before, but it was inspired by that, which then inspired others to like create the, the modern version of that.

Speaker D:

Because, like, the idea of all these different styles combined, it's just.

Speaker D:

Listen, I grew up on Street Fighter.

Speaker D:

Yeah, look.

Speaker D:

Oh, God, look, look.

Speaker D:

She kicks, stretches.

Speaker C:

I grew up on Street Fighter.

Speaker C:

And also we would rent the UFC tapes from the, the video store all the time.

Speaker C:

And UFC 1, if you go back and watch like UFC 1, 2 and 3, it's just real life bloodsport.

Speaker D:

Like, it's all these different styles.

Speaker D:

They could still have just big dudes.

Speaker D:

In the beginning of ufc, there was still a place for dudes who were just very, very big because, like, yeah, style had to come in.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

Like, as UFC continued on, you have more like a, a concentrate, like what exactly works.

Speaker D:

But before they knew kind of what worked, they tried everything.

Speaker D:

And sometimes it was big dude with beer against Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Speaker C:

Right.

Speaker C:

That that was what it was, is that it was just, it was.

Speaker C:

There wasn't mixed martial arts.

Speaker C:

It was, okay, this is the kung fu guy and he's gonna fight the jiu jitsu guy and see what happens.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Or they have like a sumo guy.

Speaker D:

It was fascinating.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

If you go back, I'm not gonna Recommend you watch UFC 1 because it's, it's wild, but I think if you look, there's a recap.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Or, or I think if you look online, the Sklar brothers did a series of them watching the first couple UFCs, and it's kind of condensed in 30 minutes.

Speaker C:

It's great.

Speaker C:

You'll see.

Speaker C:

Yeah, you'll see.

Speaker C:

Like, what was it?

Speaker C:

The Hoist Gracie vs Art Jimmerson, where he just goes in and Art Jimmerson was just like this 190 pound dude and, and hoist Gracie just goes in and chokes him out in like minutes.

Speaker D:

Like, it's just than I need to.

Speaker D:

And again, about Brazil, Brazilian Jiu jitsu and, and how it wanted to be the best in a lot of a modern UFC is based on a family trying to prove that Brazil, specifically Brazilian Jiu jitsu.

Speaker D:

Yeah, was the best martial arts, particularly for mixed martial arts.

Speaker D:

I don't need this knowledge, but I went down the rabbit hole and here it is.

Speaker C:

The Gracie's absolutely dominated for like the first 10 years of USC.

Speaker C:

Ish.

Speaker C:

But yeah, if you go back and watch those first couple of UFC again, I recommend the Sky Brothers version just because it's, it's easier to watch.

Speaker D:

You got things to do.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

So it's called the nosebleeds.

Speaker C:

If you get.

Speaker C:

Get a chance to check it out, it's on the UFC YouTube channel.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker C:

But yeah, yeah, the.

Speaker C:

They do UFC 1 specifically, and it's 20 minutes long.

Speaker C:

It's great.

Speaker C:

If you enjoyed ESPN the Ocho years ago.

Speaker D:

Another.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Another thing I love about bloodsport is that it gets in and gets out.

Speaker D:

Yeah, I forgot.

Speaker D:

I said it's a lean movie.

Speaker C:

It is.

Speaker D:

It's like, boom.

Speaker D:

First day happens, we have.

Speaker D:

And then the evening's like.

Speaker D:

And now, like, it's.

Speaker D:

It's a thought thing.

Speaker D:

Like, ooh, what kind of, like, character arc stuff has to happen?

Speaker D:

Well, our man Frank has to like, his date, Right?

Speaker D:

A date with the reporter.

Speaker D:

And she's like, well, I like her.

Speaker D:

Then I don't like her.

Speaker D:

Then I like her again.

Speaker D:

Let me explain.

Speaker D:

As.

Speaker D:

As.

Speaker D:

As the lady female character in an action film.

Speaker D:

Right.

Speaker D:

I like that she has her own things she's trying to do.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

She has her own motivations.

Speaker D:

It's the report on the kumites.

Speaker D:

Like, oh, that's great.

Speaker D:

I love that.

Speaker D:

Right?

Speaker D:

I love that.

Speaker D:

Like, at the end of this date, I guess.

Speaker D:

Spoilers.

Speaker D:

They sleep together.

Speaker D:

Of course they do.

Speaker D:

She gets to see his butt.

Speaker D:

It's great.

Speaker D:

But I like that that's.

Speaker D:

The movie took the time.

Speaker D:

The movie took the time.

Speaker B:

Okay, so quick pause about that, because that sex scene kill.

Speaker B:

Well, the.

Speaker D:

After.

Speaker B:

The morning after kills me.

Speaker B:

Because typically when you're watching these action movies, right.

Speaker B:

Like, I.

Speaker B:

I get.

Speaker B:

It's like a male power fantasy, right?

Speaker B:

What?

Speaker D:

What?

Speaker D:

They're all oiled up.

Speaker B:

They're.

Speaker B:

Whatever.

Speaker B:

It's muscles, you know?

Speaker B:

But usually right in the morning, after you're going to have a sex scene, it's like she would be the person kind of getting.

Speaker B:

And she's literally pulling the blanket up and her.

Speaker B:

And she's wearing, like, a nightgown.

Speaker B:

You.

Speaker D:

You can.

Speaker D:

Guys.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

She's fully covered.

Speaker B:

And he's like, I just need you to know, here's my butt in this underwear.

Speaker B:

Like he is in another thing.

Speaker B:

He gets sluttier this whole movie.

Speaker D:

He does.

Speaker B:

And then he starts with his D, and by the end of the movie, he's got nothing but those type of shorts on.

Speaker B:

It is.

Speaker D:

Not.

Speaker D:

Not a side quest to the side quest there.

Speaker D:

But that's part of the reason why canon films, like, because this was like, his first big film.

Speaker D:

Yes.

Speaker D:

Part of their whole thought process is he appeals to the men and the Women.

Speaker D:

So for sure they put that scene and make sure they had that seat in there because they considered him to be like, you know, a fourth quadrant star.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

And I'm not gonna complain.

Speaker D:

Okay, so.

Speaker D:

So yes.

Speaker B:

And then I like her and they.

Speaker D:

Sleep together and I like that.

Speaker D:

Like, that's not her instant ticket.

Speaker D:

Because I was like, that'd be gross either way.

Speaker D:

He's like, I'm sorry, but I still can't.

Speaker D:

I'm like, that's fine.

Speaker D:

And I love that she shows up later with the gambling guy.

Speaker D:

I love him.

Speaker D:

And she's like, I go undercover and it's not like they don't like each other.

Speaker D:

It's like, okay, you did what you had to do.

Speaker D:

I'm doing what I have to do.

Speaker D:

I love that.

Speaker D:

Right here's where it falls apart a second for me.

Speaker D:

Now all of a sudden, she's caught feelings.

Speaker D:

And even though her entire, like, reason being there was to write about the kumite, as soon as she thinks Frank might get hurt, she like runs to the Hong Kong police and it's like, this is where the kumite is.

Speaker D:

The man I.

Speaker D:

This man there, Frank Dukes.

Speaker D:

Right?

Speaker D:

So I'm like, oh, come on now.

Speaker D:

Like, why would she do that when her whole reason to be here, like, I wish she was a little like, you know, she could still care, but also want to continue her like her mission.

Speaker D:

Right?

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah, I will.

Speaker D:

I will give the movie this.

Speaker D:

So at that one, like, obviously he knows that she told the Hong Kong police because she's right there for some reason.

Speaker D:

I don't know why she came with the police and the army guys.

Speaker D:

Weird idea.

Speaker D:

But later when she's there, know when the.

Speaker D:

The army guy's like, I guess Frank's doing it.

Speaker D:

And she sit down.

Speaker D:

Like they meet the eyes and there's not that like, I hate you for this.

Speaker B:

It's just like, understand like, you did what you thought you had to do.

Speaker D:

So I go back to like, all right, movie that could have been worse.

Speaker D:

I still wish that it wasn't.

Speaker D:

Like all of a sudden, this dude I slept with once, I'm blowing up my entire big report for.

Speaker D:

But at least it didn't become a thing with them.

Speaker D:

I would say middle tier female co lead sorta in an action film from the 80s.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Right there.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Worse.

Speaker D:

I've seen worse, but I seen better.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

And then.

Speaker D:

I'm sorry.

Speaker D:

Anyway, so that's the end of day.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Start on day two.

Speaker D:

Oh my God.

Speaker D:

JCVD butt.

Speaker D:

I'm sorry, I can't Take you, baby.

Speaker D:

And she's like, don't worry about it.

Speaker D:

I figured it out.

Speaker D:

And it's basically favorite guy.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

And this is where the stuff.

Speaker D:

Stakes rise.

Speaker D:

Day two is when gets real.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

Because now Rey ends up fighting Chong Lee.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And I guess I wish.

Speaker B:

And all those big men that they had there, if they had.

Speaker B:

Had just.

Speaker B:

It's the only fight scene that, like, kind of stinks.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

It's.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

You know, just because they.

Speaker B:

They don't give him anything to do other than his little hulk smash thing.

Speaker B:

So.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

I don't know if they could have played it off with Chong Le a little bit more like, make Chong Lee do.

Speaker B:

You know, make bolo.

Speaker B:

Bolo.

Speaker B:

Do more of the heavy lifting in that.

Speaker D:

Yeah, it was.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

I don't know how that's the.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Because I think what it comes down to is, I think Ray's actor.

Speaker D:

I don't know how much he was a athlete, so.

Speaker D:

Yeah, so he doesn't.

Speaker B:

Basketball.

Speaker B:

He played football.

Speaker D:

Football.

Speaker B:

He was supposed to.

Speaker B:

I think he was about to get drafted for the Chargers.

Speaker B:

I looked him up quick.

Speaker D:

Oh, nice.

Speaker B:

So there.

Speaker B:

There is.

Speaker B:

There.

Speaker B:

There is an athlete there, not a martial artist.

Speaker B:

So, yeah, that is the.

Speaker B:

The downside.

Speaker B:

Just that because, like, dude, why are you cheering?

Speaker B:

This man has killed somebody.

Speaker B:

We know this.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

That's what.

Speaker D:

You know, I mean, I think they try to set it up a little with Frank's telling him, hey, hey, his guts, his weak point, stay away from his right leg.

Speaker D:

But, yeah, I think visually, because I think there is some really good fight choreography in here.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

But I don't know there was much they could do in this fight, except I guess they kept it short.

Speaker D:

So there's that.

Speaker D:

Because I'm like, listen, I know.

Speaker D:

I know something's got to happen.

Speaker D:

Like, you know, the stakes have to be raised.

Speaker D:

Sorry, Ray, you're the friend, not the star.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

He gets his brain smashed in.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

And Frank's like, no.

Speaker D:

And I guess holding him back.

Speaker D:

Hilarious.

Speaker D:

I'm like, what, five foot Nothing.

Speaker D:

Listen, I like the guy.

Speaker D:

He's a little dude.

Speaker D:

I'm a little person.

Speaker D:

I understand.

Speaker D:

He's trying to ride him like a backpack.

Speaker D:

He's like, please.

Speaker B:

No.

Speaker B:

You know what?

Speaker B:

Here's.

Speaker B:

Here's a thought.

Speaker B:

Maybe.

Speaker B:

Maybe he loses money if the people he's responsible for mess up.

Speaker D:

For sure.

Speaker D:

Like, for sure.

Speaker D:

Like, I don't think it's like, oh, I'm buddies with these people.

Speaker D:

It's like, it's my job to make sure that The.

Speaker D:

Yeah, Yeah.

Speaker D:

I.

Speaker D:

Which I like.

Speaker D:

I'm like, no, no.

Speaker D:

Like, this is business for him.

Speaker D:

Thank you very much.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Because he.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

So gives.

Speaker D:

Oh, he.

Speaker B:

He'll give, like, Frank a hard time for not showing up.

Speaker B:

Or like, what are you doing?

Speaker B:

Or you're not.

Speaker B:

You're like.

Speaker B:

You're not paying attention.

Speaker B:

I need you to be locked in.

Speaker D:

You're my responsibility.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

I need you here and focus.

Speaker D:

Exactly.

Speaker D:

Oh, wait.

Speaker D:

And we forgot that this is Chong Lee takes a raised bandana.

Speaker D:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker D:

Like, yeah.

Speaker B:

Man with two bandanas.

Speaker D:

And you're just rubbing it in our faces.

Speaker D:

He's bandana rich.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

See?

Speaker D:

He's truly a villain.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

He's like, I got you.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

And it's also a message to Frank.

Speaker D:

Like, it's not even like, I beat Ray to beat Ray.

Speaker D:

He's like, I beat Ray for you, Frank, you know, which I love.

Speaker D:

I love that.

Speaker D:

Like, again, kind of a petty.

Speaker D:

And I love that because he broke his wrecker.

Speaker C:

Chung Lee is full on a petty through this whole movie.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker C:

He's the best.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

And I think that's basically.

Speaker D:

That's the most important thing that happens in the second round, because then we go to the hospital, and it's okay.

Speaker D:

Everybody raised alive, and he's gonna be okay because his head's like a rock, which I love.

Speaker D:

It's his superpower.

Speaker D:

But he's gonna.

Speaker D:

He's out of the tournament, and he's got to recover.

Speaker D:

And also, he's missing a bandana, y' all.

Speaker C:

I mean, here's the thing.

Speaker C:

If I remember right, his head is still bandaged, so it's kind of like the.

Speaker C:

The medical bandana, but still, he's got the head covered.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Because I think it was like a Harley Davidson or one or something.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

How do we know he's American?

Speaker D:

How do we know he has no identity?

Speaker D:

With white gauze around his head, he could be anybody.

Speaker C:

He's been robbed.

Speaker D:

And I think that's when Janice is like, no, like.

Speaker D:

Like, you're gonna get yourself killed, Frank.

Speaker D:

And they have that.

Speaker D:

I think that's when they have the discussion, because she's like, I'm doing this because my dad was a reporter.

Speaker D:

And he's like, I'm doing this because, like, his father figure, my kindness father, who's still alive, as far as we know, I must go back to his father who came to the States to open a vineyard, to work in a vineyard.

Speaker D:

But whatever.

Speaker D:

Frank's not interested in that.

Speaker D:

That.

Speaker B:

Accents thinking about that.

Speaker B:

I was like, yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

That's gotta have been, like, dubbed over.

Speaker D:

Dude, try to do Belgian.

Speaker D:

What?

Speaker D:

It's not French.

Speaker D:

I think I'm gonna kind of do a bad French.

Speaker D:

Is that Belgium?

Speaker B:

So I looked it up in Brussels.

Speaker B:

They.

Speaker B:

It's a bilingual country, so they speak French and Dutch.

Speaker D:

Okay.

Speaker B:

So, yeah, who knows?

Speaker D:

Maybe that's an accurate accent and I'm being an.

Speaker D:

No, it could be, like, you nailed it.

Speaker D:

The way you could.

Speaker B:

Like, you know, he does.

Speaker D:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker B:

That is speaks French and the mom speaks Dutch, and that's how we get Frank.

Speaker D:

I mean.

Speaker D:

I mean.

Speaker D:

I mean, listen, like, if Guile's American, I think we're fine.

Speaker C:

Right?

Speaker D:

You know what?

Speaker D:

At this point, JCPD is whatever you want him to be.

Speaker B:

Yes, yes.

Speaker B:

He's played an American soldier or cop so many times.

Speaker D:

Yeah, I'm to that point.

Speaker D:

Like, not.

Speaker D:

I think that's just a regional accent.

Speaker D:

Well, I think I've heard that.

Speaker C:

Here's the thing.

Speaker C:

It's the Schwarzenegger corollary.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker C:

Where.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

How many times did Schwarzenegger play guys like John Kimball, you know, like.

Speaker C:

Yeah, Peterson.

Speaker D:

Like an all American dad.

Speaker D:

Jingle all the way.

Speaker D:

What's more American?

Speaker C:

Right?

Speaker D:

No, I think there was the 80s action.

Speaker D:

We're like, you know what?

Speaker D:

Nothing in this movie is realistic.

Speaker D:

Why do we care?

Speaker D:

It's fine.

Speaker D:

He's American.

Speaker D:

He's American.

Speaker B:

But this is based on a true story.

Speaker B:

I don't know if you heard, jp.

Speaker D:

You're right.

Speaker D:

Oh, my God, I'm so embarrassed.

Speaker D:

I forgot he wrote a whole book about this.

Speaker D:

Oh, and there was an.

Speaker D:

Oh.

Speaker D:

Article in Black Belt magazine.

Speaker D:

Ah, the egg on my face.

Speaker D:

Y' all right now.

Speaker D:

Sorry, Frank.

Speaker B:

Frank would be the type of guy who would make up an accent, just pick one up one day and act like it was normal.

Speaker C:

Just.

Speaker C:

Just an accent no one's ever had.

Speaker D:

I feel like I want to go back and watch some more footage and see if it shifted.

Speaker D:

Oh, God.

Speaker D:

Oh, God.

Speaker D:

Probably.

Speaker D:

Oh, no.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

But anyway, so the stakes are set because then she goes off to the police.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

The Hong Kong police, who have been working with the army.

Speaker D:

Like, you get this idea that the Hong Kong police try to stay hands off on the kumite.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Because, like, it's the criminal underground runs it.

Speaker D:

But, like, the army guys, one of whom's Forrest Whitaker, who I always forgets in this movie.

Speaker D:

And I'm always pleasantly surprised that he's in this movie.

Speaker D:

So anyway, she goes.

Speaker D:

And that way.

Speaker D:

Now she goes to the Hong Kong police.

Speaker D:

And when she says Frank Dukes.

Speaker D:

Oh, well, I Guess we gotta deal with this and get the army off our back.

Speaker B:

Yep.

Speaker D:

So they set it up so they know where it is on here the third day.

Speaker D:

And then we have one of my favorite scenes, which is sad Frank.

Speaker D:

And the music comes on.

Speaker D:

It's like one of those, like low key numbers and nights falling on Hong Kong.

Speaker D:

And he's sitting in the bus and he said.

Speaker D:

And then he looks, he sees a reflection.

Speaker D:

He thinks it's like Chong Lee, like winking at him.

Speaker D:

And then he turns around, it's just an old dude next to him, but he's haunted, y' all.

Speaker D:

All night he's haunted, but he's trying to keep it together.

Speaker D:

And as the music fades out, he's again doing another split, but on the roof of a building overlooking the sunrise.

Speaker D:

And it's inspiring.

Speaker D:

I want a poster of it.

Speaker D:

I just want to say, hang in there.

Speaker D:

What is Jean Claude Van Damme doing to split over a Hong Kong sunset.

Speaker C:

Like an acrobatic Batman.

Speaker D:

Yes, exactly.

Speaker D:

He's gonna save us all, y' all.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

I love that because it's very 80s and there's like neon and there's the.

Speaker D:

I love the music in this, which.

Speaker D:

Which is music I can never really remember except for the kumite part, but it sits where it's supposed to, so.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

I don't know if you realize that's Stan Bush.

Speaker D:

Oh, I feel okay.

Speaker D:

Okay.

Speaker D:

You've got the touch.

Speaker D:

I know.

Speaker D:

Stan power, which, I gotta be honest, I mean, the only reason I remember that is I was the right age for Transformers.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

That'S the more memorable song, the Transformer song.

Speaker C:

By the way, one of the more bizarre moments in film history is when Dirk Diggler starts singing that in Boogie Nights.

Speaker C:

It blows my mind every single time.

Speaker D:

Oh, my God, I forgot.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

You know, it's an era defining anthem.

Speaker D:

And I'm only half joking.

Speaker B:

No, because it's like that movie's traumatizing.

Speaker B:

I rewatched it recently and it pulls no punches.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

It's a generation destroyed.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

So I'm sorry, did Optimus prime just.

Speaker D:

Sorry.

Speaker D:

Spoilers, y' all, for the Transformers animated movie.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Optimus prime dies.

Speaker D:

Dad Truck dad died everybody and messed us up.

Speaker B:

And I almost said 30 years.

Speaker B:

It's been 40 years.

Speaker C:

It's been 40 years.

Speaker D:

I liked.

Speaker D:

I liked 30.

Speaker D:

In fact, if you went 20, I wasn't gonna say anything.

Speaker C:

Busch came back in the early:

Speaker C:

Which sounded just like the theme song to the Cartoon Mask Ambush has a sound, and every song sounds like the Touch, and it's always fucking cool.

Speaker D:

I mean, once you.

Speaker D:

Once you hit that level, just keep going.

Speaker C:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker C:

He nails it.

Speaker C:

I mean.

Speaker C:

Oh, wow.

Speaker C:

He had a song in the.

Speaker C:

The American Voice dub of Sailor Moon.

Speaker C:

He did Kickboxer.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

It's so funny because it's like.

Speaker D:

I would say it's before anime really hit in America.

Speaker D:

We had an anime song, and it's called you've Got the Touch.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Called the Touch.

Speaker D:

And I love that.

Speaker D:

I was like, yeah, we were getting ready.

Speaker D:

We were.

Speaker D:

We were getting primed.

Speaker D:

The generation getting primed.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker C:

Optimus primed.

Speaker D:

Oh, damn it.

Speaker D:

Oh, I.

Speaker D:

I'm proud of you.

Speaker D:

And I'm upset and I'm proud.

Speaker C:

Dim mock, baby.

Speaker D:

That was a verbal dim mock.

Speaker D:

A Dimock.

Speaker D:

That absolutely inspired the.

Speaker D:

Was it the Five Finger Death?

Speaker B:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker C:

From.

Speaker C:

From Kill Bill Part two.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

I was like, that's a Tarantino.

Speaker D:

Yeah, Yeah.

Speaker D:

I was like, there we go.

Speaker D:

And I'll.

Speaker D:

I'll give it to him there.

Speaker D:

He.

Speaker D:

He gave it a little more drama.

Speaker D:

He gave it that, like, oh, it takes a second.

Speaker D:

And he knows that.

Speaker D:

He just got dim mocked.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

What is it, five paces?

Speaker C:

Yeah, that's right.

Speaker D:

Yeah, I got like, you know, I'll give it to him.

Speaker D:

That was a really good use of that.

Speaker D:

I was like, there we go.

Speaker D:

There we go.

Speaker D:

I had to give it to Tarantino.

Speaker C:

Did Tarantino make some good movies?

Speaker C:

Is that.

Speaker C:

Is that what you're trying to say right now?

Speaker D:

Listen.

Speaker D:

Okay, like, sometimes he was cooking.

Speaker D:

Okay.

Speaker D:

Sometimes he cooked.

Speaker D:

All right, I'm.

Speaker D:

There.

Speaker D:

I said it.

Speaker D:

Am I happy about it?

Speaker D:

No.

Speaker B:

And every time you're like, yeah, he cooked that, it's like, it got a little weird, but he still cooked.

Speaker D:

I said, I saw a foot and I remembered who made myself.

Speaker C:

Right.

Speaker C:

Yeah, there's some foot stuff in there.

Speaker C:

There's some stuff that feel real uncomfortable a lot of the time, but, I mean, there's a good movie in there somewhere.

Speaker B:

Yep.

Speaker D:

Anyway, the third day.

Speaker B:

Man.

Speaker B:

We're still at the beginning of the third day.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker C:

Holy.

Speaker B:

Watch.

Speaker C:

Shout out to punches and popcorn.

Speaker C:

We're gonna make this longer than the actual movie.

Speaker D:

Yeah, I believe it does.

Speaker D:

So, yeah, he's.

Speaker D:

Oh, that's where we see one.

Speaker D:

My.

Speaker D:

The.

Speaker D:

The.

Speaker D:

The.

Speaker D:

The.

Speaker D:

The.

Speaker D:

The last kind of.

Speaker D:

Not the last time we see gambling guy, but the last time he does the thing I love, which is like, okay, so Frank's late because the Police waylay him, and he's gotta, like, obviously take them out because he's Frank Dukes and what are these mooks gonna do?

Speaker D:

Nothing but get punched in the face.

Speaker D:

So, yeah, so Lynn's there going, hey, hey, you know, don't worry, he's coming.

Speaker D:

And then, like, the Black Dragon Society guys are like, no, it's too late.

Speaker D:

And then gambling guy comes up and, like, slips money into one dude's pocket.

Speaker D:

Like, what's a couple minutes?

Speaker D:

And then Frank walks in that exact minute.

Speaker D:

And the guy yoinks the money back and walks off.

Speaker D:

Because he's a professional.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

And you don't have to bribe somebody if something's already working.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

Yeah, but I was like, I love him.

Speaker D:

I always focused on his job.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

And Frank at this point is like, his, like, investment.

Speaker D:

He's all in on Frank, baby.

Speaker C:

Right?

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker B:

How you feeling, Frank?

Speaker B:

Oh, I'm feeling good.

Speaker B:

Yep.

Speaker C:

That's how it goes.

Speaker B:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

Love that dude.

Speaker D:

But yeah, so we get that last.

Speaker B:

Two matches kind of right.

Speaker B:

We're in the.

Speaker B:

I guess, is it the semi finals?

Speaker C:

Is that.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

Oh, and then.

Speaker D:

So the army guys have finally given up.

Speaker D:

They finally given up.

Speaker D:

And they're with.

Speaker D:

Yeah, they're with Janice.

Speaker D:

And she, like, just of kind.

Speaker D:

Come sit.

Speaker D:

We're just gonna sit and watch whatever happens because you can't stop it.

Speaker D:

Which I appreciate.

Speaker D:

Just sit and watch the show.

Speaker D:

Gentlemen.

Speaker C:

Forest Whitaker finally gets to have a hot dog and a beer.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

Yeah, he was.

Speaker D:

He just wanted to enjoy the food and relax.

Speaker D:

He's like, this is.

Speaker D:

What are we doing the entire time?

Speaker D:

He's like, I don't think we're catching him.

Speaker B:

No.

Speaker D:

I don't know why this older, like, his older, like, partner dude, I'm like, you're too focused.

Speaker D:

Like, it's.

Speaker D:

This isn't.

Speaker D:

This is where we were always gonna end up played by Frank.

Speaker C:

You can't stop Frank Dukes.

Speaker C:

You can only contain him.

Speaker C:

So let's just stop him while watch the show.

Speaker B:

Yep.

Speaker B:

He promised he would be there when the tournament was done.

Speaker D:

So.

Speaker D:

Yeah, he kept telling them.

Speaker D:

I was like, I'll be at the airport no matter what.

Speaker D:

I'll be at the airport when this is over.

Speaker D:

You can waste your time, or you could just have fun in Hong Kong.

Speaker D:

And they wasted their time, mostly.

Speaker C:

Yeah, sure.

Speaker D:

But yeah, so they're there.

Speaker D:

She's there watching.

Speaker B:

You know, he goes against the big guy.

Speaker B:

So Frank goes against the big dude.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker B:

For his semi finals.

Speaker D:

I think that's right.

Speaker D:

I forget, like, everything before that final.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

It's like.

Speaker D:

It's like just business.

Speaker D:

They're doing just like he does.

Speaker B:

Yeah, he does the move, right.

Speaker D:

Yeah, he does, like, the slow mo.

Speaker C:

Like the cool, like.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And then.

Speaker B:

And then he does what Johnny Cage became famous for and does the spirit split and then uppercuts the guy in his privates.

Speaker D:

So the nut punch.

Speaker D:

Hey, everybody, you ever in a kumite, which is very real.

Speaker D:

I want you to know that it's no holds barred.

Speaker D:

No holds barred.

Speaker D:

One of the holes.

Speaker D:

You can do nut punch.

Speaker D:

It's on the table.

Speaker C:

Yeah, punch him in the ding.

Speaker D:

Remember, Remember, It's.

Speaker D:

It's on the table.

Speaker C:

Yep.

Speaker B:

And then Chong Lee goes against a guy we haven't really seen before.

Speaker B:

Or not.

Speaker C:

He's not, like, so much.

Speaker B:

Original cast of characters.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

I don't remember him having a hook, a reason or any.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Which for good reason.

Speaker C:

Because he gets.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

He gets absolutely murked by our good friend.

Speaker D:

And I just have to remind everybody.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Right in the Gooch.

Speaker D:

You know what?

Speaker D:

I couldn't have put it more poetic.

Speaker B:

Yes, yes.

Speaker C:

Van Damme, king of the Gooch bunch.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

But nobody did split the same time, so it's really hard getting the razzle dazzle.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

But of course, we're all built.

Speaker D:

And what I appreciate, again, about this movie is, like, the last 15 minutes or the final fight.

Speaker D:

It knows how to, like.

Speaker D:

You need a little more time.

Speaker D:

That fight has to breathe because we've been leading up to it, you know, treat it.

Speaker D:

It's special.

Speaker B:

Best John Claude Van Damme face acting we've ever seen.

Speaker D:

Oh, my God, that man's mug.

Speaker C:

Holy.

Speaker D:

Because here's the thing, and we haven't seen this before, so we don't know if Chong Lee has cheated before or just this one time.

Speaker D:

Because we see in the beginning his, like, little.

Speaker D:

His, like, ring dude.

Speaker D:

What would you call that?

Speaker D:

The person who has.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Like, slips his thumb thing into, like, Chong Le's like, like, belt area.

Speaker D:

You're like, oh, what's that?

Speaker D:

I don't know.

Speaker D:

Because the fight starts normal.

Speaker D:

Like, oh, crap, look at Frank's.

Speaker D:

Frank's doing it, and he knows where his weak spot is.

Speaker D:

His gut.

Speaker D:

And he knows to stay away from the right leg.

Speaker D:

So it'll be no problem.

Speaker D:

Plus, you know, super interesting.

Speaker D:

This is the only time that the, like, the floor they have set up, it must be just for the final fight.

Speaker D:

They have it.

Speaker D:

So it's like a V with a flat bottom part.

Speaker D:

Like.

Speaker B:

Oh.

Speaker D:

So they get f.

Speaker D:

Funneled In.

Speaker D:

I like this.

Speaker D:

Well done.

Speaker D:

Black Dragon Fighting Society.

Speaker D:

They have a sense of drama and flair.

Speaker B:

I don't know if you know this, but they've been doing it for quite some time.

Speaker D:

Yeah, right.

Speaker D:

Like, it's so weird everyone knows this, even though nobody knows it, because it's a secret fighting tournament.

Speaker D:

But I like.

Speaker D:

So they start, like.

Speaker D:

You had that first part of the fight where like.

Speaker D:

Okay, yeah, Frank.

Speaker D:

Frank.

Speaker D:

Frank knows what he's doing.

Speaker D:

Yeah, Frank.

Speaker D:

Yeah, Frank.

Speaker D:

Right?

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

But damn it, Chong Lee.

Speaker D:

When he gets knocked down, and he's not gonna take this.

Speaker D:

Knocked down.

Speaker D:

So he, like, reaches in and he goes, oh, my God.

Speaker D:

It's something.

Speaker D:

He.

Speaker D:

He crushes it and, like, oh, whatever it is, he blows it into Frank's eyes.

Speaker D:

Oh, no.

Speaker D:

I think they said Frank can't see.

Speaker B:

It's a salt pill.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

Something like pocket sand.

Speaker B:

That's all you need.

Speaker D:

Yes, it is pocket sand.

Speaker D:

Yes.

Speaker D:

Gay be.

Speaker D:

I'm like, oh, no.

Speaker D:

But we've never seen him fight.

Speaker D:

Not be able to see.

Speaker D:

See.

Speaker B:

But wait, but have we.

Speaker C:

Before we go further.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

This is the same thing that happened in WrestleMania 9.

Speaker D:

Is that.

Speaker B:

Which.

Speaker B:

What year was WrestleMania 9?

Speaker C:

1993.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker D:

God, they copied Bloodsport.

Speaker D:

What?

Speaker B:

What a surprise.

Speaker B:

They knew it was in the.

Speaker D:

Wait, who did it happen to?

Speaker D:

I have no memory of this.

Speaker C:

It's.

Speaker C:

It's my.

Speaker C:

My brother's favorite WrestleMania at Caesar's Palace.

Speaker C:

WrestleMania 9 it is.

Speaker C:

Brett the Hitman Hart versus Yokozuna.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker D:

Gas.

Speaker C:

Bret Hart gets the better of Yokozuna, and it's about to go his way.

Speaker C:

And then Mr.

Speaker C:

Fuji gets up and throws a handful of salt in Brett the Hitman Heart's eyes.

Speaker D:

Are you telling me a wrestling manager did something untoward in a fight?

Speaker C:

Mr.

Speaker C:

Fuji.

Speaker D:

Never.

Speaker C:

Mr.

Speaker C:

Fuji.

Speaker D:

Wait, wait.

Speaker D:

The ref didn't see anything?

Speaker B:

No.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

No, he did not.

Speaker C:

He did not.

Speaker D:

That's wild.

Speaker D:

That's wild.

Speaker C:

A quick moment for a side story about Mr.

Speaker C:

Fuji.

Speaker C:

Mr.

Speaker C:

Fuji like, to play pranks on people backstage, like, in real life.

Speaker D:

Amazing.

Speaker C:

So there was a guy that had to make his next town, so he rented a car.

Speaker C:

He had to make his next town within, like, six hours.

Speaker C:

So while the guy was out wrestling, Mr.

Speaker C:

Fuji hired some guys to go to his rental car and completely dismantle the man's engine and take it out.

Speaker C:

Like, got the hoist, pulled the engine out and left.

Speaker C:

So the guy got out to his rental car, tried to start it.

Speaker C:

It didn't start.

Speaker C:

He opened the hood.

Speaker C:

No engine.

Speaker C:

That's Mr.

Speaker C:

Fuji.

Speaker D:

I feel like, that's beyond a prank.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

I mean.

Speaker B:

Here'S a bus ticket, buddy.

Speaker B:

Or, like, here's.

Speaker B:

Here's a nicer car.

Speaker C:

On the scale of wrestling pranks, there's no poop involved, so, like, that's.

Speaker C:

That's pretty.

Speaker C:

Okay.

Speaker D:

Thankful, I guess.

Speaker D:

You're right.

Speaker D:

You know what?

Speaker D:

You're right.

Speaker D:

Thanks, Matt, for really bringing us to what really matters.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

He wasn't that bad.

Speaker C:

No.

Speaker C:

If you really want to know wrestling pranks, look up the British Bulldogs.

Speaker C:

It's terrible.

Speaker D:

Anyway, I would like to sleep tonight.

Speaker B:

Peacefully, so we gotta focus.

Speaker C:

Anyway.

Speaker D:

Almost done.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Yes.

Speaker B:

So he throws the salt pill, and he's.

Speaker B:

Then we remember.

Speaker B:

He centers himself.

Speaker B:

He's been prepared for this.

Speaker B:

And then the movie reminds us.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Taught him, though.

Speaker D:

We do get.

Speaker D:

I think this is someone where we get some of the best patented face acting.

Speaker D:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker D:

It's like when he has his, like, palms and he screams, like, frustration.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

But it screams into serenity.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

And he's like, wait a second.

Speaker D:

I was taught by my teacher who this is all about.

Speaker D:

And 10, Chong Lee tries to go in for a head hit.

Speaker D:

And he's like.

Speaker D:

No, he catches it.

Speaker D:

You're like, oh, here comes.

Speaker D:

The turn has come.

Speaker D:

And now Frank.

Speaker D:

In fact, my.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

My favorite movie is Chongley actually pushes the ref at Frank, knowing that he can't see.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

That's okay, because Frank senses this is a different person.

Speaker C:

Another classic wrestling maneuver.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

No.

Speaker D:

And then we have triumph.

Speaker D:

Because nothing's gonna keep her boy down.

Speaker C:

That's right.

Speaker D:

But the most important thing is, like, so we were told there's three ways to win, right?

Speaker D:

Either a knockout, you throw them completely off, like, the fighting area, or you get them to say mate, which means I give.

Speaker D:

And if I remember correctly, we don't see that at all during bloodsport.

Speaker D:

Not at one point.

Speaker D:

Except Frank, who's angry.

Speaker D:

He's trying to do her teacher.

Speaker D:

He's doing it for Rey.

Speaker D:

So he doesn't punch out Tongley.

Speaker D:

He doesn't throw him off.

Speaker D:

He puts him down.

Speaker D:

He puts him in, like, a.

Speaker D:

Like a headlock.

Speaker D:

And he's like.

Speaker C:

Submits him.

Speaker C:

He gets here in that Rear naked choke.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

He say it.

Speaker D:

And then, of course, for a third time, say it.

Speaker D:

Ah.

Speaker D:

And a movie.

Speaker D:

Yay.

Speaker C:

So cathartic.

Speaker C:

So good.

Speaker D:

You're right.

Speaker D:

He takes the bandana.

Speaker D:

Because this is what this has been about.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

And I appreciate the movie.

Speaker D:

Then wraps up real quick because, like, boom.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Boom.

Speaker D:

To the hospital.

Speaker D:

Hey, Ray, I.

Speaker D:

I beat that guy.

Speaker D:

In fact, I made him submit.

Speaker D:

Oh, here's your panda.

Speaker D:

Stop losing your clothes, your fights.

Speaker B:

What I love about this bit is that they have the intense long goodbye ends, eye contact locked in, and they.

Speaker D:

Almost do that forehead to forehead thing, which I love is for bro energy.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

I like that.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Because we're too scared to kiss.

Speaker C:

That's really what that is.

Speaker B:

Exactly.

Speaker B:

I was like, this is gay.

Speaker B:

But Janice is just like, this is so lovely.

Speaker D:

And here's.

Speaker D:

And I'm glad the movie does that because I would not have bought a long, lingering goodbye from.

Speaker D:

From those two.

Speaker B:

No.

Speaker D:

Like, I'm like, it hasn't built to that.

Speaker D:

They had sex.

Speaker D:

They had a good time.

Speaker D:

All right.

Speaker D:

But, like, the relationship is Frank and Ray.

Speaker D:

Like, they have a.

Speaker D:

They're pros, man.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

They got pro energy.

Speaker D:

However you wish to define that.

Speaker B:

I mean, he did smooch a homie, Just not on the lips, on the cheek.

Speaker D:

A spirit.

Speaker D:

I think it's a spiritual smooch.

Speaker B:

Listen.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

If I still.

Speaker B:

I should go sail the high seas of fan fiction.

Speaker B:

Because it's there.

Speaker C:

Hasn'T it?

Speaker C:

Yeah, you're probably right.

Speaker D:

And then I appreciate.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

And then they.

Speaker D:

They bring home the whole I'll meet you at the airport joke where you have.

Speaker D:

The army guys are waiting, like, outside the airplane.

Speaker D:

Like, oh, man, he played us again.

Speaker D:

You're always late.

Speaker D:

He's already in the plane.

Speaker D:

And he comes out, y' all late.

Speaker D:

And I was like.

Speaker B:

And then shows up and just waves goodbye, and they do their little, like, thing.

Speaker D:

And then she does a whole, like, I.

Speaker D:

And I'm like, another reason why.

Speaker D:

I'm like, okay, I like her again.

Speaker B:

Right?

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

And she didn't get all like, you can't go, or, I'm gonna go with you.

Speaker D:

I'm like, they just.

Speaker D:

They're.

Speaker D:

They just met.

Speaker D:

It's fine.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

She's got a.

Speaker C:

You know what?

Speaker B:

She's got an article or a book or whatever to write.

Speaker D:

Write a couple letters, see if long distance works, and take it from there.

Speaker C:

They hooked up and they don't have to really put any more on, and it's fine.

Speaker D:

And then you get the funniest part of the movie, which is the words that come up on the screen.

Speaker D:

This is based on the true story of Frank Duke.

Speaker D:

There's like, two or three.

Speaker C:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker D:

That are telling you all about how amazing Frank.

Speaker C:

How many slides about how cool Frank Dukes is.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Literally, it's a paragraph about how many matches he had, how long he fought.

Speaker C:

For, and 300 and some odd.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Okay, buddy.

Speaker B:

And then it's the.

Speaker B:

All these world records.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Amazing that he got that in there.

Speaker D:

Like, I'm sure he insisted.

Speaker D:

Hey, you know what?

Speaker D:

Just make sure that everyone knows this is a true story.

Speaker D:

Sheldon and I need you to put this part in.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

Amazing.

Speaker D:

Amazing.

Speaker C:

His record.

Speaker C:

321.

Speaker C:

1 and 7.

Speaker C:

He did say in:

Speaker C:

He retired with a fight record of 329 wins in zero losses.

Speaker D:

Lies a little believable.

Speaker D:

No, never a loss.

Speaker D:

He stopped.

Speaker C:

He was also in the CIA, although that was news to Robert Gates, the guy that ran the CIA.

Speaker D:

Yeah, it was.

Speaker D:

It was news to the CIA.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

He also worked for Storm and Norman Schwarzkopf, which was also news to Storm and Norman Schwarzkopf.

Speaker C:

He worked for the Mossad.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Anybody?

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah, no, this.

Speaker D:

I think I forget.

Speaker D:

Did I say this, like, before recording?

Speaker D:

Where, like, really towards the goal.

Speaker D:

The end of the.

Speaker D:

A golden age of a certain kind of con artist, where it was still kind of harder to look stuff up.

Speaker D:

Like, you couldn't just as a per.

Speaker D:

You know, you'd have to do extra work.

Speaker D:

You'd have to get microfiche involved and maybe call a phone or two to check stuff, you know, so he.

Speaker D:

He really rode that wave of people who kind of wanted to believe it, because I think his audience was dudes who also kind of thought that.

Speaker D:

Oh, my God.

Speaker D:

The only thing that kept me.

Speaker D:

Yeah, I got.

Speaker D:

I wish I had met a ninja master when I was 11 and my whole life would be different.

Speaker D:

I'd be cool.

Speaker D:

Like, it's that he.

Speaker D:

There's a certain fantasy that he, you know, I think, fulfilled for a certain kind of person.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

So.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

But now we can just enjoy it and go, dude.

Speaker C:

Bless you, Frank Dukes.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

Thank you for giving us Bloodsport.

Speaker C:

Oh, weird.

Speaker C:

I was gonna go look at his website, officialfrankdukes.com but it doesn't work anymore.

Speaker B:

You probably have to have money to continue rolling in, and I think he's a certain age where he stopped.

Speaker C:

Go, daddy.

Speaker C:

And yeah, here we are.

Speaker D:

Yeah, you know what?

Speaker D:

Like, there's nothing.

Speaker D:

You know what he got.

Speaker D:

He.

Speaker D:

He got to ride the wave, and he also got some of the consequences later.

Speaker D:

So.

Speaker C:

Yep.

Speaker D:

You know what you.

Speaker D:

What are you gonna do?

Speaker C:

Oh, wow.

Speaker C:

So he was fight choreographer on this one also.

Speaker C:

Lionheart, another JCVD joint.

Speaker D:

I'm sure he was full of very useful information.

Speaker C:

Only the Strong featuring Iron Chef.

Speaker C:

Mark Dacasko's.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker B:

The way my brother and I used to Watch the heck out of that movie.

Speaker C:

It's a damn good movie.

Speaker B:

I think of the song.

Speaker B:

We'll have to do that one eventually.

Speaker C:

That one's fun.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

The.

Speaker C:

The only Hollywood movie that showcases Capoeira.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker C:

Shout out to our friend Chris Thompson on that.

Speaker C:

And then the Quest, the JCVD directorial debut, which was actually the end of the relationship between JCVD and Frank Dukes.

Speaker C:

Dukes sued JCBD for, I don't know.

Speaker B:

Stealing his idea or something.

Speaker D:

Yeah, for being cooler than him.

Speaker C:

Yeah, It's.

Speaker C:

It's too close to the manuscript that he wrote.

Speaker C:

But he also wrote it.

Speaker C:

You wrote them?

Speaker C:

I don't understand.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

So he lost the case because the jurors found the testimony less than credible because audio tapes with the agreement with JCVD were destroyed in the Northridge earthquake.

Speaker B:

Yes.

Speaker D:

Oh, my God.

Speaker D:

What?

Speaker D:

I mean, listen.

Speaker D:

Wow.

Speaker D:

God, I love poor, poor Frank.

Speaker D:

Like, none of his records exist.

Speaker D:

Nobody knows how cool he was.

Speaker D:

They have to.

Speaker D:

Government has to keep some of it secret.

Speaker D:

God, it.

Speaker D:

He has just carries this weight.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

He also wrote a book and published it.

Speaker C:

He did do that.

Speaker C:

He also had a book written about him called Stolen Valor, so that's not great.

Speaker D:

No.

Speaker B:

All this sounds about right.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

So Frank Dukes.

Speaker D:

Fascinating and exhausting based on a true.

Speaker C:

Story as far as you know.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

But this was really kind of the.

Speaker C:

The rocket ship for jcvd.

Speaker C:

This is where it kind of launched, right?

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker C:

Because then we had Cyborg Kickboxer, Lionheart, which I do want to say, out of the JCVD movies.

Speaker C:

How is it the kickboxer is the one where he rolls his hand in the broken glass and not block.

Speaker C:

Bloodsport.

Speaker D:

I feel like they almost didn't have, like, Bloodsport was, like, lean and they didn't have room for it, so they're like, you know what?

Speaker D:

We'll.

Speaker D:

We'll.

Speaker D:

We'll breathe later.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Hey, don't forget Double Impact, where there's two John Claude for the price of one and one one.

Speaker D:

He had a nice, rich life and he wears pastels and he's cool.

Speaker D:

And the other guy.

Speaker D:

Oh, no.

Speaker D:

He had to live on the streets and his hair slicked back.

Speaker D:

Hey, do they have to pretend to be each other once?

Speaker D:

Maybe.

Speaker C:

That.

Speaker C:

That's another Sheldon Lettich film.

Speaker D:

I, I, I.

Speaker D:

That's genuinely fun.

Speaker D:

Is it good?

Speaker D:

I don't know how to define that word.

Speaker D:

I enjoyed it and I'd watch it again.

Speaker C:

Bolo.

Speaker C:

Young pops up in there again.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

And.

Speaker D:

What other jcvds are we talking about here, huh?

Speaker D:

Huh?

Speaker D:

Huh?

Speaker D:

Okay.

Speaker D:

Well, then we get kind of.

Speaker D:

Oh, you know what?

Speaker D:

Double team.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Well, let's go back, because I do want to say Double Impact also features Julie Strain, which for a certain contingent of us who grew up on USA Up All Night.

Speaker D:

And Early Internet.

Speaker C:

And early Internet.

Speaker C:

That's a name amongst names.

Speaker D:

Also six foot something and worth the climb.

Speaker C:

Yeah, exactly.

Speaker C:

And married to one of the TMNT creators.

Speaker D:

Oh, yes.

Speaker D:

And it was in a Andy Sedaris film.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Oh, God.

Speaker D:

We're connecting it all.

Speaker D:

Yes.

Speaker D:

I remember this.

Speaker D:

He.

Speaker D:

She's in some of his later films.

Speaker D:

And then Kevin Eastman is actually in one of them.

Speaker D:

And I think it's just because he was on set with his wife at the time.

Speaker C:

Yep.

Speaker D:

Hey, guess what?

Speaker D:

You're in the movie now.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Because she was in.

Speaker C:

Oh, geez.

Speaker C:

Which one was it?

Speaker C:

Lethal Ladies Return to Savage Beach.

Speaker D:

Oh, you're right.

Speaker D:

That's why I thought.

Speaker D:

Because I was watching the sequel to Savage Beach.

Speaker C:

Yep, of course.

Speaker D:

So I could know what happened.

Speaker D:

It was important to know.

Speaker C:

Yep.

Speaker D:

Yeah.

Speaker D:

Oh, yeah.

Speaker D:

And yeah, I love Double Team because that's the one with Dennis Rodman.

Speaker C:

Dennis Rodman.

Speaker C:

That's very good.

Speaker D:

And Mickey Rourke.

Speaker D:

And it's okay if you want an over the top action finale.

Speaker D:

Would you like when that happens at the Coliseum?

Speaker D:

That involves tigers and landmines and a baby.

Speaker C:

Yeah, that one's fun.

Speaker D:

All of these things are happening at the same time.

Speaker C:

But here's the thing about that one, because I feel like it's just kind of a redo of sudden death where it's in the.

Speaker C:

In.

Speaker C:

In Pittsburgh, in.

Speaker C:

In the arena there.

Speaker D:

I just.

Speaker D:

I like a movie that's, like, realistic.

Speaker D:

This is an action film.

Speaker D:

Why would I bother?

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

But, yeah, jcvd.

Speaker C:

his entire career until about:

Speaker C:

Yes.

Speaker D:

I have not seen.

Speaker D:

I know that he did that whole series that was kind of based on him being Jean Claude Van Damme, but also like a secret agent.

Speaker D:

I haven't seen it, though, so I can't tell you.

Speaker D:

You know, you want to know what?

Speaker C:

It's kind of fun.

Speaker C:

It's kind of.

Speaker D:

Okay.

Speaker B:

You get to a point where it's like, you stop taking yourself so seriously.

Speaker B:

Maybe then you just have a good time.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker C:

There was one of the Universal Soldier movies that was really good, too.

Speaker D:

I mean, I'll never be upset.

Speaker D:

I'm always happy to see him.

Speaker D:

You know, I.

Speaker D:

You know, he had a certain something that was unique for the action stars at the time, you know?

Speaker C:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

Like, he wasn't like a big dude, he was like a quick dude.

Speaker D:

A flexible.

Speaker D:

Incredibly flexible dude.

Speaker B:

In case you weren't sure.

Speaker B:

Just go back and watch that trailer.

Speaker B:

You don't even have to watch all the bloodsport.

Speaker D:

Got you.

Speaker C:

He was the star of the sequel to Kill Them all that came out last year.

Speaker C:

I didn't even know that was a thing.

Speaker D:

I.

Speaker D:

I have not kept up with his later career, and that's.

Speaker C:

Okay, here's the thing.

Speaker C:

Oh, okay.

Speaker C:

Not that.

Speaker C:

Kill Them All.

Speaker C:

Okay, cool.

Speaker C:

There was a different one, because.

Speaker C:

Am I thinking of the right movie with Paul Giamatti?

Speaker D:

Oh, God, I don't know.

Speaker D:

I got.

Speaker C:

Oh, no, that would shoot him up, which is a movie we should do at some point.

Speaker B:

All right.

Speaker D:

I like how we are also doing some podcast business.

Speaker B:

Maybe we land the ship and.

Speaker C:

Probably a good idea.

Speaker D:

You know what?

Speaker D:

Let's get out of the split.

Speaker C:

Yeah, let's pop up out of the split.

Speaker C:

By the way, there is a weightlifting move called the Van Damme Press, popularized by Rob Van Dam, professional wrestler, where he's in a full split and he's doing curls kind of in between his legs up to his chest.

Speaker D:

So if your name Van Damme, you can do a split.

Speaker C:

I think that's how Rob Van Damme got his name.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

Except he's V A, N, D, A.

Speaker D:

N.

Speaker D:

I just want to believe this, man.

Speaker D:

I just want to believe that if you're called Van Dam, you are given.

Speaker C:

The gift of split, that I think that's how it happened.

Speaker C:

Like, he wasn't Rob Van Dam.

Speaker C:

And then they saw him do the split, he's like, oh, you're a Van Damme for sure.

Speaker D:

That's.

Speaker D:

That's.

Speaker D:

That tracks.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

But the differentiation between the two of them is JCVD allegedly real into coke, whereas Rob Vanam real into weed.

Speaker D:

Oh, hey, a quick little note here.

Speaker D:

Okay.

Speaker D:

If when we do a Seagal one, we have to talk about the fact about him and JCVD almost coming to blows at a party.

Speaker D:

Anyway, yeah, one of them ran away.

Speaker D:

Guess which one.

Speaker C:

Do that.

Speaker C:

We talk about judo.

Speaker C:

Gene labelle making Seagal poop his pants.

Speaker C:

And then.

Speaker D:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker D:

Anyways, everybody, that's a teaser.

Speaker B:

We'll see you in the next one.

Speaker D:

Thank you.

Speaker C:

KP wants to go to bed, and so we're good.

Speaker D:

Well, we're talking about things we're gonna.

Speaker B:

Do in the future.

Speaker B:

So it's like.

Speaker D:

Yeah, you're right, you're right.

Speaker D:

Gotta leave them wanting more.

Speaker C:

This is how the sausage gets made, kids.

Speaker C:

This is what we usually do after we stop the show.

Speaker C:

But we just wanted to give you a little peek behind the curtain.

Speaker D:

Energy that Bloodsport will bring into your life.

Speaker D:

Hey, turn it on one night.

Speaker D:

Have a good time.

Speaker C:

Why not?

Speaker C:

Why not?

Speaker C:

So, yeah, this has been the Anomaly Presents podcast.
